Ever wonder how the Beekeeper gets the honey out of the honeycomb? Come meet Beekeeping expert, Bill Bundy, and find out. Bundy has headed the Loudoun Beekeepers Association for years, teaches classes in beekeeping and manages all the hives at Great Country Farms which are essential to pollinating the orchards and vegetables for the farm’s CSA and pick your own fruits & vegetables. Bundy will discuss beekeeping and demonstrate how honey is extracted from the comb. Guests are invited to u-pick tart cherries which will be in season and are one of the crops the honeybees make possible at GCF. Honey from the hives at GCF is available in our Farm Market for purchase as well.
One-third of our food supply–the fruits, vegetables and nuts we eat– are pollinated by bees, but the current bee population in the US is now less than half of what it was in 1945. The importance of the honeybee in our food chain has come to the forefront and this is an excellent opportunity to learn more about honeybees and what you can do to help sustain them.
The Roosteraunt Bakery will feature pizza flatbreads, kettle corn, and our famous cider donuts. Hand dipped Virginia-made ice cream is the perfect ending to a day well spent with family.
