Marla was strategically positioned beside us at the Chicks Picks pop-up show last weekend, and it didn’t take us long to figure out that we should be working together. In fact, a lot of people seemed to think that we were partners already — she was offering samples of dried kale chips and I had a big pile of fresh kale that I pushed on everybody who paused in front of the table.
Marla was also sampling sweet potato chili, the allure of which drew a steady stream of hungry women up from the distant booths in the nether reaches of 8 Chains North, where the show took place. “Is there any more?” they’d ask in awe-soaked voices, having apparently chatted with previous samplers. Or maybe they were coming back for seconds. Most of them hid their quarts inside their shopping bags, as if they were afraid of being mugged by women who arrived after the last quart was sold.
After sampling the chili myself, I understood that fear — and by then the quarts were gone.
Lucky for those early purchasers that I couldn’t leave my table.
Come on out and try Marla’s animal-free dishes on April 30.
